Swimming and Lifeguards

Swimming

Sandy Hook has lifeguards on duty form 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day Weekend to Labor day at five ocean beaches. The guarded beaches are South Beach Areas C, D, E, Gunnison and North Beach.

The southern portion of Gunnison Beach is clothing optional.

The National Park Service and the SHF is concerned for the safety of everyone who visits and enjoys Sandy Hook. Please swim only where there are lifeguards , the currents and riptides on both the oceanside beaches and the bay side areas like all things in nature can be unpredictable and dangerous, do not swim in areas where you see unprotected area signs

To protect nesting shorebirds, pets are banned from ocean beaches from March 15 through Labor Day. Areas along the beach may be closed to park visitors as well. Open fires and metal detectors are prohibited.
